Terms for using this site
Reading the route guides costs you nothing and commits you to nothing. These terms set out what the guides are, what they are not, and where responsibility sits once you are on the road.
The guides are opinion
Every route guide here is the written opinion of private drivers who have driven that road. It is not a professional engineering assessment, not a licensed guiding product, and not a substitute for your own judgement on the morning you travel.
Where we give a gradient, a distance or a fuel figure, it is our best measurement or our honest estimate, and we say which. Treat round numbers as round numbers.
Conditions change without notice
Mountain roads in the Western Cape close for rockfall, flood damage and fire. Surfaces deteriorate, pull-offs get fenced off, farm stalls change their hours and gravel roads can be graded smooth one week and corrugated the next.
Check the condition of your route before you set off. We revisit the popular guides two or three times a season, which is not the same as knowing what a road is doing today.
You are driving, not us
Decisions about speed, gear, overtaking, turning back and whether to cross a drift are yours alone and are made with information we do not have. Nothing on this site transfers any part of that responsibility to us.
Keep your vehicle roadworthy and your licence valid, and obey the traffic rules and signage even where a guide suggests a different pace. A guide that disagrees with a road sign is wrong.
Paid planning work
Prices on the costs page are indicative and confirmed by telephone before we begin. What we deliver is a written plan and, where agreed, a briefing or an inspection of your own car with you present. We do not drive your vehicle and we do not accompany you on the route.
If we cannot deliver what was agreed, we say so and we do not charge for it. If a route turns out to need re-driving before we can write about it honestly, we tell you how long that adds before we start.
What belongs to whom
The text and photographs on this site are ours. Quote a paragraph with a credit if it is useful to you; do not republish a whole guide, and do not resell our route sheets as part of a commercial product.
If you think something here is inaccurate or that a photograph is not ours to use, telephone us and we will look into it and correct the page if you are right.
Limits, plainly stated
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for loss, damage, injury or expense arising from the use of information on this site or from a route plan we wrote. That includes vehicle damage on gravel, delays caused by traffic or weather, and costs arising from a closed road.
These terms are read under South African law. If part of them cannot be enforced, the rest still stands.
